Grief by surprise

God it comes out of nowhere and hits me like a brick...
unsuspectingly watching movies and trying to relax.
Last month it was Bride Wars, a cheezy chick flick that I thought would be a light-hearted giggle added to my now regular insomnia.
But no, it was an emotional attack out of the blue...
One character dealing with her lack of parents, mournful of their absence from her wedding, the other nick-named 'bug,' my mother's nickname for me since before I can remember.
Today, The Help.
I've put off reading the book, or watching the movie for a good long while. The subject matter kinda pisses me off. People watch these movies and think we're so far removed from the racism prevalent in those days. We're not, it's still everywhere. People tend not to talk about it in mixed company, they keep it quiet, but it's still there.
Well I saw it for rent at the library today and decided I would check it out, see if it lived up to the hub bub.
Amidst the racial tension i got smacked right the face with it.
The young eager writer, her mother fighting cancer.
She got to see my first article published and the second.
But not the first byline with 'staff writer' under my  name.
oh just to hear my Mama say she's proud of me again...
